Oil, Lotion, or Cream? My Favorite Massage Product

Updated: May 25, 2023

As a massage therapist, I understand the importance of using the best massage product.

After years of testing different oils, lotions, and creams, I've found a product I love and regularly use in my practice, so I want to share what I use and why I think it's great.

Why The Product Matters

I know it doesn't seem particularly important, but the type of product matters for a few reasons.

Oils, lotions, and creams have different viscosities, meaning some are more slippery than others. The product that works best depends what type of massage techniques you're using. If you're using relaxing techniques, more glide is needed. If you're using firm pressure or deep tissue techniques, less glide is optimal.

Next, massage oil impacts your skin. As I'm sure you know, all products are NOT made equally. Subpar products are a recipe for allergies, acne, and absorption of toxic chemicals. I'm in massage oil up to my elbows every day, and I don't want to expose you or myself to side effects like that.

My Favorite Massage Product

I use HobaCare Jojoba extract, a liquid wax ester derived from the seeds of the jojoba plant. In the plant world, it'sdon't the closest compound to the sebum naturally produced by our skin. Its versatile uses include a moisturizer, hair conditioner, and makeup remover.

HobaCare is a product of The Original Jojoba Company. According to their website, "[Their] farmers discover, share, and implement the ways to produce jojoba that's best for [their] workers, the environment, and for you." They are involved in every part of the process, producing the highest quality jojoba product.

What do you like about HobaCare?

Jojoba absorbs quickly and doesn't leave a greasy residue. It's rich in vitamins and minerals, including vitamin E, which helps nourish and protect the skin and hair.

It's unscented and doesn't contain nuts, so it's safe for people with allergies. In addition, it's non-comedogenic, meaning it won't clog pores, so it's suitable for all skin types.

Jojoba is often used to help with dryness, redness, and irritation. I struggle with dry, cracked skin patches in the winter, and HobaCare has helped tremendously.

What do you dislike about HobaCare?

I only have two complaints, and they'reit's small ones. First, it isn't as thick as cream or lotion, so it tends to run through my fingers like water, so I have to clean my treatment room floors regularly.

Lastly, it's not my favorite product for a foot massage. Most people have thicker skin on the soles of their feet, and jojoba oil doesn't glide well in that spot, so I keep a bottle of massage lotion attached to the foot of the table. Problem solved.

Until Next Time

It's important that the massage oil I use feels good during your session and offers lasting benefits to your skin. If there's a different product you want me to use for your massage, you can bring it with you.
