Welcome to Unkinked!
I help people improve their quality of life by reducing muscle pain, pregnancy discomfort, stress, tension headaches, and chronic pain with massage therapy. In this welcome to Unkinked post, I'll share a little about my experience as a massage therapist and some background info on my career.
Where did you learn massage therapy?
I attended the massage therapy program at Miller-Motte Technical College. While there, I maintained a 3.9 GPA throughout my 1,200 hours of coursework on the history of massage, anatomy, pathology, kinesiology, special populations, practical training, and student clinics.
Massage therapy is regulated in our state by the North Carolina Board of Massage and Bodywork Therapy. Massage therapists must pass an exam called the mBLEX, operate within the Scope of Practice outlined by the NCBMBT, and complete 24 hours of continuing education every two years. My license number is 15819.
How long have you been a massage therapist, and where have you worked?
My first job as a massage therapist was lined up at a small franchise day spa in Raleigh before I received my license in August 2016. I was blown away when I interviewed for the job. It was BEAUTIFUL, providing amenities and treatments I hadn't even dreamed of.
It was the perfect job for a new therapist. Every fancy treatment had its own written protocol, and training sessions were scheduled regularly. I was soaking up knowledge like a sponge, and I'm grateful I had that opportunity. I spent three years working alongside many talented therapists while I found the rhythm of my new career.
When a former teacher reached out about an opening at the Spa at 1010 Nash in Wilson, I was ready for a change, and the drive would be much shorter, so I took a chance at a new place. I was there for just over a year when Covid shook the world.
Why did you open your practice?
Covid put things into perspective for many of us, and it wasn't any different for me. I realized how much I value fostering relationships with my clients and building connections in my community.
More than anything, I wanted to build a business that worked for me. With this in mind, I filed the Articles of Organization in October 2021 and accepted my first client at Unkinked Massage Therapy on January 3, 2022.
What Kinds of Massage Do You Provide?
My focus is helping people improve their quality of life by relieving pain and stress while managing the root cause of their symptoms. I use trigger point therapy, deep tissue massage, relaxation, and pregnancy massage. If you want to learn more about specific types of massage therapy, check out my massage page for more info.
I mix and match techniques for each treatment to best suit each client. Our bodies are different, so treating them the same wouldn't make much sense. That's why I charge for time instead of technique. It removes the confusion of booking your appointment and allows me to change your treatment plan as needed.
I'm happy to provide deep pressure if that's what you prefer, but I think the 'no pain, no gain' mentality is bullshit. Sometimes, discomfort is okay, but if your treatment is excruciating, it's likely to cause more harm than good. Sometimes, more pressure is NOT the answer to your pain problem. In my practice, everyone is welcome. I'm committed to creating a healing space where you can kick back, relax, and be yourself. I serve people regardless of age, race, religion, body type, nationality, sexual orientation, gender identity, neurodiversity, or disability.
Every session is free of judgment, and I strive to be mindful of my interactions with clients of varying backgrounds and cultures. I continuously learn from those I serve and aim to be accountable by welcoming feedback with grace and using it to become a better ally.
